In the series of photographs »Zwischenzustand«, Joana Dias reveals her interest in people´s relationships with architecture. With this work she investigates the ruins of the industrial sites built during the communist era in Albania.

After the fall of the regime, its industrial heritage – that once was a symbol for a desired prosperity – became forgotten sites. A new form of reclaiming structures was also established: people started taking the factories left over materials – brick, metal, etc. – to build their own homes.

This constant movement has given to these sites the quality of space »in between« where their old structures offer new life.
